=== Drug design of RXPA 380 === RXPA380 was the first inhibitor that was highly selective of the C-domain of ACE, it has the formula Phe-Phe-Pro-Trp. The development of this compound was built on researches that showed that some bradykinin-potentiating peptides showed selectivity for the C-domain and all had several prolines in their structure. These observations lead the researchers to synthesize phosphinic peptides containing a proline residue in the P1’ position and evaluating these compounds led to the discovery of RXPA380. To study the roles of the residues on RXPA380 the researchers made 7 analogues of RXPA380. All of the compounds made were obtained as a mixture of either 2 or 4 diastereoisomers but all of them were easily resolved and only one of them was potent. This is consistent with the initial modeling studies of RXPA380 which showed that only one diastereomer could accommodate in the active site of germinal ACE. Analogues where pseudo-proline or tryptophan residues had been substituted showed less selectivity than RXPA380. This is probably because these two analogues have more potency toward the N-domain than RXPA380 does. Substituting both of these residues gives great potency but none selectivity. This shows that pseudo-proline and tryptophan residues accommodate well in the C-domain but not in the N-domain. Two more analogues with both pseudo-proline and tryptophan but missing the pseudo-phenylalanine residue in P1 position showed low potency for N-domain, similar to RXPA380.
=== Candidacy for mayorship of Porto Alegre in 2016 === In 2016, Melo was the candidate for the mayorship of PMDB, with state deputy Juliana Brizola, of the PDT, as the vice-mayoral candidate on the ticket. In the first round, they received 185,655 votes (25.93%). They came in second place behind Nelson Marchezan Júnior, and both qualified for the second round. Melo received a diverse array of support, including from the PCdoB, the PMN, and from the PV's candidate, Marcelo Chiodo, even as his party supported Marchezan Júnior. He also positioned himself as more to the left, announcing his support for the fight against PEC 241, which established a ceiling for public spending for twenty years in Brazil, also going against the national position of his party. Along with this, he affirmed his position against proposed laws inspired by Escola sem Partido, a conservative movement. Melo declared that he had an "identity of struggles" with the left, since he came from the "old MDB", as the party was the main political force against the military dictatorship. As a candidate, he had shown opposition against the privatization of public companies, such as DMAE, Procempa and Carris, and defended participatory budgeting. After a tense campaign with constant trading of accusations between him and Marchezan Júnior, Melo was defeated in the second round, receiving 262,601 votos (39.50%). After the election, on analyzing his defeat in an interview, Melo criticized the possibility that the MDB would become a part of his adversary's administration.

=== 2011 Sinaloa massacre === On 23 November 2011, a total of 26 bodies—16 of them burned to death—were located in several abandoned vehicles in Sinaloa. The incident began at early hours of the morning in Culiacán, Sinaloa with the discovery of a vehicle on fire. When the police forces managed to put down the flames, they found inside the vehicle a dozen bodies burned to death, and with wood remains on top of them. All of the victims were handcuffed. Later, at 07:00, anonymous calls from civilians notified the police that another vehicle in the northern city limits of Culiacán was on fire. The vehicle on fire was a Ford Ranger, and inside were four bodies with bulletproof vests and handcuffed. During the night, 10 more bodies were found throughout several municipalities. The killings were allegedly carried out by Los Zetas as a response to the massacres done by the Matazetas (CJNG) in Veracruz. Stratfor believes that this major move by Los Zetas into the territory of the Sinaloa Cartel demonstrates the Zeta's ability to attack the "heart of those cartels' territories."

High mass resolution is required to distinguish different isotopologues of very close relative molecular mass (same "cardinal mass", e.g. 13CH4 and 12CH3D (17.03465 Da (daltons) versus 17.03758 Da), 13CH3D and 12CH2D2 (18.04093 Da versus 18.04385 Da).
